Closing Ceremony of the 55th Anniversary of China-Canada Diplomatic Relations Series and Commemorative Concert for the 90th Anniversary of the December 9th Movement
and the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the World Anti-Fascist War
On the evening of December 7, 2025, with the attention, support, and assistance of the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, the commemorative concert “Celebrating Diplomatic Ties · Honoring History · Embracing the Future”— Closing Ceremony of the 55th Anniversary of China–Canada Diplomatic Relations and the 90th Anniversary of the December 9th Movement & the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the World Anti-Fascist War was successfully held at the Tribute Communities Recital Hall, York University.
Hosted by the NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir, and co-presented with the Tsinghua Alumni Performing Arts Group, this historic concert served as the closing chapter of the year-long celebrations marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.
The concert was led by Dr. Leo Li—young conductor and board member of Choral Canada—alongside renowned overseas Chinese musician and composer Wang Yanqiao, and Cai Hongmei, conductor and leader of the Tsinghua Alumni Performing Arts Group.
Their collaboration symbolized a heartfelt tribute by Chinese musicians to peace, friendship, and shared convictions—an artistic dialogue across three generations, carrying forward the legacy of musical excellence and cultural heritage.
Honored Guests Gather to Witness a Historic Moment
The event received broad attention and support from across politics, academia, culture, education, and the overseas Chinese community.
Over 40 distinguished guests attended in person, lending cultural depth and historical significance to the occasion.
Before the concert, a small reception and discussion was held with the main dignitaries. The conversation centered on the historical importance of the 55th anniversary of China–Canada relations, cultural development within the Chinese community, and the role of choral music as a bridge for cross-cultural understanding. The atmosphere was warm and insightful, setting an inspiring tone for the evening.
A highlight of the event was the presence of Mr. Zhang Ange and his wife. Mr. Zhang is the son of Guang Weiran, the lyricist of the famous work Yellow River Cantata. Their arrival was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Their remarks expressed a solemn remembrance of history and heartfelt hopes for lasting China–Canada friendship.
Concert Highlights: Six Musical Chapters Traversing History
The concert unfolded in six thematic chapters, weaving together the narrative of modern Chinese history, the journey of China–Canada friendship, and a shared vision for peace and the future. Each chapter resonated with emotional depth and historical memory.
In tribute to the 90th anniversary of the December 9th Movement, the choir performed works such as Graduation Song, The Song of the Great Wall, The Yellow River Ballad, and Love Never Dies, guiding the audience back to a defining era of national struggle and awakening.
The concert also honored the 120th anniversary of composer Xian Xinghai’s birth and the 80th anniversary of his passing, with heartfelt performances dedicated to the great people’s musician.
Composer Wang Yanqiao, co-author of the classic The Clear Waters of the Wanquan River, personally coached the choir during preparations and conducted his own work during the concert.
Under the baton of Cai Hongmei, the choir continued with Ode to the Red Plum Blossom and My Motherland, paying tribute to the heroes of the Republic and the deep love of its people.
With featured soloists Huang Yan and Tang Hong, the ensemble presented Fields of Hope, As Wished, The Search, and Spring Story—musical portraits of China’s rapid progress during the reform era, expressing unwavering belief in a brighter future.
Remain True to Our Original Aspiration, China in the Light, and The Motherland Will Not Forget formed a powerful trilogy, reflecting the resolute steps of national development and the quiet dedication of countless ordinary contributors.
The beloved My Motherland and I brought the concert to an emotional peak, capturing the profound bond and heartfelt blessings shared by Chinese people at home and abroad.
The grand finale, Song of Youth, radiated idealism and optimism, embodying the shared pursuit of peace, friendship, and better tomorrows between the peoples of China and Canada. The three conductors took turns leading the choir, bringing the evening to a triumphant conclusion.
From the passionate calls of the December 9th Movement, to the historic handshake that established China–Canada diplomatic ties;
From the flames of the Anti-Fascist War, to today’s era of peace and prosperity—
Music has borne witness to history and given voice to our shared aspirations.
